Solar Energy

Our solar system has developed and grown over the years, we have learnt what works well for us. We welcome visitors who wish to learn from our experiences, or are just curious about what it takes to live off grid. Please make an appointment if you wish to visit.

Solar 'Power House'
Solar Shower House

Solar hot water

We have a solar hot water system for the 'Shower House' supplemented with a wood stove for use in the winter. During the summer there is ample hot water for showering.

Solar Batteries

Solar Electricity

We have four newer solar panel arrays and an assortment of older panels for the main power generation. These connect to a central deep cycle battery for storage and an inverter for supplying 110V AC to the community house and workshop.

Solar Panels

The electricity is used for lighting in the community house, supplying kitchen appliances including a refrigerator and freezer. The office equipment includes computer, printer and a satellite modem. There is power remaining for our workshop power tools and an occassional movie.

We also have a small solar panel that powers a well pump, this is used to help keep our irrigation tank full.

Solar Oven

Solar Cooking

When the sun is used for cooking it saves a lot of propane and reduces heat in the community building. With a little preparation and planning a tasty dish or meal can be ready at the end of the work day.

Wind

We have 2 small wind generators on top of the 'Power House', but they do not generate a significant amount of power.

Back up power

For periods of high demand we also have a backup generator that can be used to maintain charge in the batteries, it operates with propane.
